YARD CRANES
The Yard crane is sometimes neglected by the railway modeller. The
prototypes show a great variety of styles and sizes, but while one sees
a few well detailed scratch-built models, most modellers seem to fall
back on the rather limited range of commercially available products.
Hence the accompanying pictures may be of some interest.

This is a crane at a small station in Spain, which would make an
attractive model.

The one above used to be situated in County Durham and is another one
which has a stone base.

These are two New Zealand Railways cranes. Although
unsuitable for an accurate British prototype layout, they
would be appropriate for a freelance system, particularly
if narrow gauge. The first crane, uppermost, is used for the
coaling-up of locomotives at a country station. The second is of a small yard crane at Amberley.

The picture above is not strictly a yard crane, but in a small yard this
may be more convenient than that of a fixed type. |

Two cranes from county Durham.
When this station was closed a scrap metal merchant
moved into what was the goods yard. He then used the
crane to move round the scrap.

On the left is not a goods yard crane but a small
dockside crane. It would make a quite attractive model. |
