SURAVA
O Gauge by
Bob Simmonds
This is my attempt
to capture part of the metre gauge railways, the Brig-Visp-Zermatt, the
Furka Oberalp and the Rhaetischebahn, that cross the southern part of
Switzerland on the route of the Glacier Express. For most of its track
miles the RhB is single track, which makes operation simple, but needs
passing places and loops at most stations. The station modelled is on
the Albula section of the Rhaetian Railway that serves the Canton of
Graubunden. Sadly the real ‘Surava’ station now only receives goods
traffic.
Track work was
custom-built by Marcway of Sheffield. The rolling stock is mostly
from the same range, manufactured over the years by four separate firms
in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The range is now very rarely
available and no new items are planned. We have most of the range
available for use on the layout with some mixing of stock from the Furka
Oberalp railway. The Glacier Express is represented by coaches of the
RhB hauled by either the Ge 4/41
of the RhB or by one of the two He 4/411
of the Furka-Oberalp railway. Various train formations represent
freight and mixed traffic services together with local trains. There
are no four wheel wagons available outside a special range which was
made for the Swiss market only, but various bodge–it (scratch built?)
wagons have been attempted by me to be used ‘under cover of darkness!!’
