Spring Garden
N Gauge by
Steve Searson
This small layout (6' x 2' 9") was built
for my boy's after they had seen the video Feather River Canyon, which
was borrowed from our railway club, and it also replaced their ageing oo
gauge layout which was really too big for their room.
The time to build was around 18 months
and it was also shown at the local model railway show. The base
board was built up using traditional methods with 24mm x 24mm
timber frame covered with plywood top, plastic ceiling tiles formed the
base for the river banks and hill's covered with plaster and painted
with acrylic
paint, many coats of varnish were put into the river once the bed had
been painted.
The stock came from various manufacturers
most weathered and fitted with Kato buckeye couplers, the buildings
being kit built mostly with Bachmann
providing the depot, the bridges were also from adapted kits or built up
from scratch. The tree's came from an old Christmas tree cut and
formed in to shape and then dipped in pva glue and then Woodland scenic
foliage, the
completed trees were planted once they were dry.
The layout was powered by
an old Scalextric cased transformer which powered the plug in hand held
controller and the on-board point c.d.u. designed so that the boy's
could use the layout on their own. This they did until they had grown
out of it, and after a time in storage it was sold on for someone else
to enjoy.
