SOUTHCOTT
OOGauge By Matt Godwin
The layout was never intended
to be publicly displayed but with a digital camera purchased last
Christmas it made things a lot easier and seeing lots of other layouts
on the web I thought why not.
Construction was very basic, lengths of batten screwed to three walls
with the 12mm chipboard placed on top with IKEA metal curtain poles
supporting the front of the layout, simple but very strong. Trackwork
comes from the reliable PECO range, turnouts are Electro frog which aids
slow running essential on an end to end layout. A total of 10 isolation
sections were added and when tested the track was ballasted with
Woodland Scenics N gauge ballast. Being a fairly small layout the
turnouts are all hand operated.
The platform is simplicity itself PECO concrete facings/ramps were glued
in place (checking coach clearances) and when dry dark grey Artist Mount
Card cut and used for that freshly tarmaced appearance. A Dapol station
building, LED lamps, passengers etc finish of the station. Low relief
buildings from Metcalfe provide a backscene to the High Street with the
excellent and cheap Cararama motor vehicles.
Motive power on Southcott consists of EWS 37-67 with the odd Transrail
or Mainline loco visiting now and again to the Locomotive Stabling Yard.
Over half of my locos have been detailed with hoses cast buffers etc
which improves their appearance no end.31514 has had a complete makeover
i.e. roof fans scale couplings, repaint into the old BR Civils livery
and at a first attempt I'm quite pleased with the outcome. See images.
