Smith City Railroad
N Gauge by
Brian Galpin
This is the Smith City Railroad [2006] It is an N gauge layout
that I designed & built for a friend [He did the scenery & detailing]
The painted backdrop is by Murray Campbell...[Our local tame artist,
here in Nelson. New Zealand]. It is just DC controlled, all turnouts
are fitted with Peco point motors operated by the probe & stud method.
It has a double tracked main line with several hidden staging tracks,
these are fitted with infra-red detectors which light L E D's on the
three operator control panels when a staging track is occupied.
There is plenty of shunting to do, both in the yard & at several
industries, so all the locos & rolling stock are fitted with Microtrains automatic couplers. There are two turntables, electrically
driven & operated by switches on the panels.
The layout was built in a
room measuring 10'-2" x 7'-6" & is in three sections, bolted together
so it can be dismantled for moving.
Many thanks to Brian for sending us these pictures.
