Shelby Rite Railroad
N Scale by
Brian Galpin
This is the "Shelby-Rite Railroad". An N scale layout, built in my
basement at Nelson, New Zealand. It is designed for scheduled
operation. All locos & rolling stock are fitted with Microtrains
couplers, to allow automatic uncoupling for ease of sorting & shunting
wagons. It is DC controlled with provision for one to three
operators. It also has features such as an MRC Sound Station,
Operating crossing barriers [with synchronized bells & flashing
lights], & a small aircraft that flies the length of the layout, [with
the operating mechanism hidden behind the lighting valance.]
There are also lots of illuminated buildings, plus many home made
street lamps, station & yard lamps. With other lamps to mark the
locations of magnetic uncouplers. The turntable drive is also home
made & can either bypass or lock on to each track automatically.
There are many different industries, with provision for switching
cars of all types, plus a coalmine & power station which allow for
exchange of full & empty coal cars. We also have a hidden logging camp,
which features a loaded log train appearing out of the forest on its
way to the sawmill . Then later in the schedule a train of empty log
cars is returned to the logging camp for reloading.
The layout can be operated as 'end to end' - 'out & back' - or
'continual running'. The two terminal stations are at the towns of
Shelby, & Rite City...Hence the name "The Shelby-Rite Railroad"
