ROYAL GORGE
WESTERN
NGauge By John L. Widmar Jnr.
The Royal Gorge Western railroad is an N scale layout in a 14 foot by
20 foot area. When the Rio Grande and the Santa Fe were battling
over trackage
rights to the Royal Gorge in Colorado (U.S.A.), another railroad decided
to go over the gorge rather than in it. This is where the railroad
got the name of "Royal Gorge Western".
A small branch line was also started in narrow gauge and named the
Royal Gorge Southern. The suspension bridge is modelled after the real
bridge at Royal Gorge. The only difference is that the model is used to
run trains over it rather than vehicles. I realize that suspension
bridges were not very practical for railroads but they were used in some
cases. It is my way of reminding myself that model railroading is
for fun. J.L.Widmar Jr.
