PIEDRAS & REDDY RIVER
HO Gauge By
James Stanford
The Piedras & Reddy River Railroad is
an American outline freelance
mountain railroad, with
mainly diesel motive power. The track plan is based on plan 43
from the book "101 Track Plans for Model Railroaders". The railroad is
operated as a point to point layout, although it can be run as a
point to loop if desired.
The layout if 8 x 6 feet, with an 8 x 4 feet extension currently in
the early construction stages. It is designed to be portable, as I am
likely to move every few years for work reasons. Trackwork is all PECO,
or Life Like. American outline locos are either Athearn, or Kato, and
rolling stock is a mixed bag - mainly Athearn, Walthers, and Life Like.
Most buildings are easy kits, and I have
scratch built 3 trestle bridges of varying heights and lengths for the
layout. There is one grade as steep as 5% (yep, thats 1 in 20!), and so
freight trains are normally limited to about 8 cars length, while
passenger trains are normally to about 3 cars length.
The railroad is supposed to depict the mountain areas east of Boise,
Idaho,
and west of Cheyenne, Wyoming (I have no actual idea what the area looks
like, it is just how I imagine it might look!)
It has taken me about a year and a half to get it to the stage it is at
now.
It is fully operational, and wired for cab control for two or three
person
operation (one of them could be a signalman).
