POLAR EXPRESS
OO Gauge by
Colin Smyth
The Polar Express Christmas Village was
inspired by the movie of the same name and built during 2005. This
small layout is themed on the pre-WW2 era and features two trains
operating on two different levels. The tunnels and ramps were
constructed of wood, plaster and other modelling materials while the
main mountain was made of expanding builder's foam and later formed
into shape when set.
All buildings are internally illuminated
and the layout also features two illuminated Christmas trees, a
Christmas market and electrically operated track points which allow
one train to be stowed in the siding while the other is switched from
the outer loop to the internal one. Both locomotives have working
headlights. The snow effect was achieved using commercially available
snow powder and then set with a fixative agent. Other details include
reindeer, station car park complete with post-box and telephone booth,
numerous trees and people at the market, on the platform and in the
park on the upper level.
At night time, the lamp posts,
Christmas trees, building illuminations and the moving trains create
an animated winter wonderland effect.
