PENSARN
N Gauge By
Robin Griffiths
Many years ago I had an OO gauge layout as child.
A few years ago I went to a model railway exhibition and saw some N
gauge layouts. Because of the little space needed for this scale I
decided to pick up the hobby again and joined the
N Gauge Society.
I had an idea, due to lack of space, to create a layout
on a dustbin lid but eventually made it out of an old door and cut a
circle out 24" across.
Pensarn is a fictitious layout in memory of my
grandfather, Tom Owen, who worked on the railways for 58yrs.
The creation of snow was very difficult to achieve.
I used plaster of paris and polystyrene as a base for the scenery.
The snow was accomplished by using white crafters acrylic paint and
woodlands scenics soft flake snow together with plaster of paris. The
frost effect was created by sprinkling embossing powder holographic.
It took roughly one year of spare time to complete the
layout. It stands on a second hand projector stand, purchased from
a car boot sale for 50 pence. Material is then taped around the
base to hide the stand and controls.
As the layout is so small and fee standing, I was able
to take it into the lounge during the Christmas holidays for family and
friends to enjoy, with the snow scene very apt for the time of year.
I hope people will appreciate that they don't need a
great deal of space to create a railway layout and be able to enjoy this
hobby.
A special thanks to Robin for providing us with so
many pictures and a great write up.
