KINGSWEAR
By M.A.P. Model Railway Group
This is a fantastic layout with a scale length of nearly half a mile.
Kingswear Station, on the banks of the estuary of the River Dart in
South Devon, was opened in 1864 by the Dartmouth and Torbay Railway.
After operation, and then ownership, by the South Devon Railway, it was
eventually absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1978. The model
depicts the era of World War II and construction was started in1994. It
was originally built to N Gauge, but the set point work could not produce
the flowing track work that was required. Therefore it was decided
to relay the track in 2mm fine scale. This commenced in 1998 with
the extension to the Britania Halt and the new fiddle yard. In
1999 work started on the station itself. The track was constructed
on separate board to be inserted in place of the original board, causing
minimal damage to the existing layout. This is definitely one to
look out for on the exhibition circuit. Pictures taken at Warley 2001 copyright
