History
This is my 3rd layout I have
produced. I started this layout with just an oval shape to start off
with. I wanted at least to run trains round, as I got a little bored
with an end to end layout. The main objective was to base the layout on
a place. So after a little bit of thought and research, I decided on a
Scottish based layout. I have kept the layout in the era of the mid
90’s which gives me a bit of scope either way to have new and old locos
running a long side each other. I wanted the layout to have a reason
for the type of traffic that will trundle through. As Scotland is well
known for it’s distilleries, there had to be one on the layout, with
warehouses included as well.
I based the layout
on a small town that is fed by the two large cities of Scotland ie:-
Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are loco trains, which are DMU’s, which
bring in the passengers and trade. The layout also gives me a chance to
run loco hauled trains. Since the class 37 and 47 used to rule the
tracks, these locos run hauled trains now and then.
The layout has been extended in two ways.
Loco shed and
sidings
I wanted a loco shed on the layout so I
extended the layout to accommodate this. A track comes off the main
line and splits to form a siding for the distillery and then carries on
to the loco shed, where there are also two sidings for businesses as
well. There is a fuel point at the loco shed and a couple of tracks to
hold 2 locos.
The harbour
scene(pictures to follow) harbour is still under construction
I have always wanted a harbour scene on a
layout, so the layout was extended again to accommodate the harbour
scene. This is based on a fishing type harbour on the coast of
Scotland. All the buildings on this part of the layout have been
scratched built. There are low relief buildings as well as full
buildings. The line to the harbour starts from the hidden sidings and
appears again. This gives the impression that a trains actually goes
from the main station to the harbour.

Track & points
All of the track is PECO flexi track and a
couple of curves. The points are all short radius Peco points which are
all electrified. When I was starting the layout I made sure that all my
points were electrified to start off with, this makes sure that ‘m not
ripping up scenery to put point motors in. The motors are either PECO
point motors or Seep motors. Except for a couple of the motors, most of
the motors are under the board. In some places where I could not place
a motor directly under the point I have used rigid wire from the motor
to the point. A bit of clever hiding the wire with buildings or scenery
Locomotives
All the locomotives are Graham Farish and
are diesel. I like the class 37 and 47 so I have about 5 of each in my
loco range. There are other classes of loco :- class 33’s, a class 60,
class 31, class 66 and class 57’s. I have tried to keep them in 90’s
liveries but have had to buy newer.

Wiring and electrics
Most of the houses and building on the layout are wired for light. I
have done some houses individually and some on their own. The power is
from the 12volt controller. All the points have got the DCU behind them
so they give a good click when the point is changed. There are 2 DCU’s
controlling the layout, one does the inner part and the other does most
of the sidings. All the switches for the points are PECO switches.
Coaching stock
I have mainly Blue/Grey livery coaches and some Scotrail. There is a
mixer of mk1’s and mk2’s.
Freight
Most f my freight is EWS and Rail freight to fit in with the 90’s look.
There are quite a lot of EWS wagons which can make a full train up.
There are wagons for the distillery and postal wagons .
