GLENHAYDN
Build a
layout and you can bring to the Pontypridd Exhibition in
1995.
This was the
challenge given to Bill Lattimore and Ron Thorn by their
friend Haydn Shadbolt in 1993 that brought about the
construction of the layout. The time period is set
between 1946 and 1960 when steam was still around. The
final design was for four 4x 2 scenic boards
with a 5x 2 fiddle board at each end, the
total length being 26x 2. Provision was made
to be able to turn the layout in to either an L
or a U shape when the layout had finished its
exhibition life.
All track work on the layout is
Peco Streamline which is laid on 1.5mm cork strip, this
was dry ballasted and held in place with a mixture of
equal parts water and P.V.A. glue plus a few drops of
washing up liquid. The platforms are made of balsa wood
edged with embossed plasticard, the top surface covered
with printed paper to represent paving slabs. The white
edge to the platform is thin plasticard which is glued in
place and painted a dirty white. All the buildings on the
layout are plastic or card kits modified and toned down
to appear more life like. The station building and steps
are modified plastic kits, the overall roof is two Peco
kits end to end, engine shed, water tower, signal box and
goods shed are modified card kits.

As the layout was being
designed thought was given to the name of the station,
nothing really summed up the essence of the layout until
the name GLENHAYDN came to mind. Why Glenhaydn, you may
ask, its an amalgam of the names Glenys and Haydn.
It was Haydn, you remember that triggered off this layout
and both he and his wife Glenys have been most supportive
and encouraged us in our efforts and thus the layout was
named in their honour. As the layout took shape Bill and
Ron were joined by Peter and Ernie.
