Flossil Quay
009 Gauge by
David Balderstone
I have always
liked narrow gauge railways and thought, why not have a go at a layout.
This layout is on a board measuring 2” x 4”. Half of the layout is the
actual Flossil Quay and the other is hidden sidings and the power and
controller. The layout is a based on a private narrow gauge railway
company servicing a Quay. The main business is coal export and local
produce. In the holiday periods the main traffic is holiday makers who
visit the little town of “Flossil”. The layout has 4 locos running
either a passenger of freight services. These locos are either steam or
diesels. All the coaches are German and some have been repainted and
detailed with the Flossil Quay railway company wording.
All the locos are German / Belgian
style ROCO made, with two diesel and two steam locomotives. All
of which are 0-6-0 locos that provide the service. There are two types
of makes on the layout. ROCO coaches which have been repainted in
Flossil Railway company colours and Lilliput Coaches which have remain
in their original German / Belgian colours. There are four rakes of
coaches on the layout all coupled together in two’s. Mostly all the
freight is ROCO, there are a few of long wagons which take out the local
produce from the loading platform. There are a number of coal wagons
that move around the layout to and from the coal distributers.
All the track is Peco either 009
track or N gauge track, the latter is used for the hidden sidings and
under the two tunnels. The points are all Peco 009 points which are all
electrified and are controlled from the hidden sidings part of the
layout. All the 009 points are powered by Gaugemaster point motors, all
situated under the board. The scenery is a mixture of Hornby / Peco /
Bachman people, cars and other bits and pieces.
