DALTON-LE-DALE
OO Gauge by Larry Hold
Dalton-Le-Dale is a layout with a mixture of facts and
"modellers licence. The village of Dalton-Le-Dale actually exists.
Sunderland is 7 miles to the North and Teeside is 20 miles to the South.
Further West of Dalton lies the once busy coastal colliery fields of
County Durham. That was the factual side , now for the modellers
licence.
The layout depicts a line which ran through the dale (but
didn't actually exist) creating a route from the mines to the west
coast. During the boom years of mining in the area, the ports at
Sunderland, West Hartlepool and Teeside gradually began taking the
majority of the coal traffic resulting in traffic to the coast reducing.
The upshot of this was that the line was terminated at the village as it
now serves only as a branch line for passenger/goods traffic to Seaham
Harbour for connections with the coastal mainline to the North & South.
