BROOKSIDE
NGauge By Steve Searson
The Shefield -
Woodhead - Manchester route, electrified using the 1500
volt D.C. overhead system in the period between 1960 and
1970, is the theme for Brookside. The original line
closed in 1981 sadly putting an end to 140 years of
operation along this route.
The stock
used upon this layout is either scratch built, kits or
ready to run. Class 76 locomotives were required in
quantity so these were cast in resin from a rubber mould,
the master of which was scratch built in plastic and a M.T.K.
(now B.H.E.) coach roof.
Most of
the buildings are also scratch built in plastic with the
station based upon "Broadbottem" in Manchester
and named after a traction change over point near "Godley
Junction" also in greater Manchester. The layout has
been on the go since 1978 being designed and built (as
"Parkwood Springs" originally) to portray the
Woodhead route at a time when few N gauge layouts were
based on a particular route or location. For a small
layout which is operated single handed there is a fair
amount of automation which also includes the signals,
these operate via track trips and relays - no magnets or
reed switches involved here. (Steve Searson)
