ATHABASCA
NGauge Layout
The
Athabasca System Granite Canyon Division is an N-Scale
layout that is 18 inches wide and 80 feet long, in a
giant dog bone design. It will be set up at public train
shows. The layout is based on the beautiful scenery of
the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. The emphasis is on prototypical
appearance and state of-the-art operation, including
command control, realistic signalling, sound effects, etc.
Today, the
Athabasca System occupies half of a two car garage.
Eventually, when family and friends play the operating
game, two fiddle yards (each eight feet long) will be
temporarily attached to the permanent portion of the
layout, transforming the basic loop into a point-to-point
railroad. Just wait until the little woman finds out her
antique Corvette has to go outside on operating nights to
make room for fiddle yards.
The
layout is being built as eight modules: five conform to NTRAK specifications and three are freelanced.
Additionally, the two fiddle yards are freelanced. The
loop (permanent) portion of the layout fills a space that
is 11x8 feet, and features a 4x6 foot center operating
pit. A crawl under is used to reach the pit, one of the
few things I would change if I could. Bench height is
thirty- seven inches, which is eye level for seated
operators and bird's eye for those who prefer to stand or
have to stand in order to straighten out their back after
going through the crawl- under.(Clayton Barry) Thanks
to Joe Barry for providing the photographs.
