3 RAIL TINPLATE

This layout is the creation of Ray Hobin.  It was started in mid-1997 and is basically complete except for wiring the station, platform lights and connecting the Lionel "sawmill" accessory which is not pictured.  Ray has been modelling for the best part of 60 years. His dad had Lionel trains before he was born. Up until about 10 years ago he was heavily into H0 scale and has in display cases some 60 - 70 brass locos plus a few cast and plastic ones.  If anyone has access to very old Railroad Model Craftsman Magazines, you'll find some pictures of his in the May 1971 and January 1972 issues.

The layout measures 8' x 14' with a duck-under to get to the control area.  Basic framing followed the L-girder technique written up many times in MR.  Everything is level and the top platform is 1/2" plywood with 1/2" Homosote on top of that, and all covered with green felt.

Wiring uses 12 gauge colour-coded solid wire for loops and ground with
18 and 20 gauge feeders to the track approximately every 6 feet. Power comes from one MTH Z4000 and one Lionel ZW plus some other smaller transformers for some accessories.  All the lights to the main station and sheds are connected to a 6amp 14v centre tap transformer.

Most of the buildings are Lionel working accessories. The "oil company" was built using two auto oil filters based on an article some years ago in Classic Toy Trains.
Locomotives and cars are a mix of those manufactured by Lionel, Weaver, MTH, Williams and K-Line.  The bridge scene has a Williams FM and Lionel #671 depicted.  The 671 was made in 1947.  Diner in the photo of the B&M loco is a Lionel with interior lighting and it smokes through its chimney.
